Banks was born in London, the only child of James and Muriel Reid Banks. She was evacuated to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada during World War II but returned after the war was over. She attended St Teresa's School in Surrey. Prior to becoming a writer Banks was an actress, and also worked as a television journalist in Britain, one of the first women to do so. Her first novel, The L-Shaped Room, was published in 1960.After Harris wrote a sequel to the novel, The Silence of the Lambs (1988), that was turned into a highly successful film of the same name in 1991, Red Dragon found a new readership. The film featured Anthony Hopkins in the role of Hannibal Lecter, for which he won an Oscar for Best Actor in 1991. Due to the success of the film and its sequel, Red Dragon was remade as a film directed by Brett Ratner in 2002, this time bearing the title of the original novel and with Hopkins playing Lecter. Elements of the novel also influenced the NBC television series Hannibal, while the plot was adapted as the second half of the series' third season.

The Great Red Dragon and the Beast from the Sea [ edit ] It's impressive, how close the movie is to the source material; including some of the dialogue. The ending was notably, different. Obviously, they couldn't squeeze everything into the film. Manhunter was going to be called Red. Not sure how close the Red Dragon movie, resembles the book, as I can't remember squat about it, for some reason. I'll probably watch it again, someday. And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth… Perhaps I should mention, in respect to this book, that I had already seen (and loved) the movie many times, but nevertheless I was quite immersed in the story anyway. So that's my rating: not the greatest novel, not particularly memorable, but rather good fun nonetheless. This is a novel which hammers at the frightening fact that monsters are very real. Real and much more terrifying than any creatures of legend or fiction. Vampires, werewolves, creatures of the Cthulu mythos pale in comparison to those monsters who live among us everyday, usually completely indistinguishable from everyone else until they strike.
