About this deal

Madame C.J. Walker, the first self-made U.S. woman millionaire of any race, owned property in Idlewild, Michigan.

The Paradise Club showgirls and chorus girls, with guest entertainers, performed not only in Idlewild but also on the road in the off-season as the Arthur Braggs Idlewild Revue. The appeared in cities such as Montreal, Toronto, Boston, Kansas City, Chicago and to New York; in Manhattan, the group performed at the Apollo Theater. [24] Braggs' show helped Idlewild become a major entertainment center and contributed to the financial prosperity of the area. [25] Ronald J. Stephens. "The Historical Context for Understanding Idlewild's Past". Provident Foundation. Kelly’s meticulous research and attention to detail ensure that the historical context of the novel remains robust. While there may be minor discrepancies, the overall portrayal of the North Sea oil industry and its impact on society is compelling and informative. The Pere Marquette Railway ran the Resort Special with sleeping cars from Chicago and Detroit via Grand Rapids from June to September, stopping in Baldwin five miles to the west. [18] [19] The Pere Marquette Railway ran trains west from Idlewild's station to Baldwin, then Ludington; and trains went east to Saginaw. At Saginaw the trains were timed to meet with separate Bay City-originating trains to Detroit. The PM's successor, the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway ended the Ludington to Saginaw trains through Idlewild in the latter months of 1949. [20] [21]

We have the potential there to do the exact same thing." At the heart of the narrative is Aaron, whose tender courtship and marriage to Hugh Munro’s daughter, Heather, is sensitively portrayed. Kelly’s writing skillfully captures the nuances and complexities of their relationship as it evolves over time. The marriage itself is depicted with vivid detail, from the slow pour of whisky into a tumbler to the intricacies of their emotional journey. One of the book’s standout features is its insightful analysis of the economic and political impact of North Sea oil. Kelly deftly explores how the discovery of oil in the region transformed the balance of power and shaped the destinies of nations. This analysis adds depth and context to the personal stories and historical events woven together in the book. Apart from the kail-yard tokenism of our six Scotsmen, the author takes ‘dramatic license’ with so many aspects of his imaginary world. The novel also delves into the political and economic aspects of the oil industry, highlighting the pressure faced by Joe, heir to a lucrative Aberdeen trawler firm, as he grapples with the need to spend vast sums of money to secure oil from the Arabs. The comparison made by the secretary of state between the chart of the North Sea continental shelf and the carve-up of Africa adds a thought-provoking layer to the narrative, raising questions of exploitation and accountability. Pere Marquette, Tables 1, 6". Official Guide of the Railways. National Railway Publication Company. 74 (1). June 1941.

The quality of copy editing was a surprise, coming from an imprint like Faber – but the novel is primarily undermined by its loose and often anachronistic world building. The author gets his apology in as part of the author’s note: “I have taken great liberties with parts of the topography of Scotland – and one or two dramatic licenses, too, with regard to a number of its institutions and traditions – for which I beg the indulgence of any readers from that great nation.” Which is, of course, a measure of progress – I doubt if H. Rider Haggard would have felt the need to include a similar disclaimer in front of King Solomon’s Mines.Gorgeous photographs. The photographs captured life in motion and delicious recipes. I wish I could turn those photographs into postcards. The discovery of oil is the fulcrum of the novel, impacting everyone for good and for ill. Kelly takes many cues from history, but what’s most impressive about this assured, deeply researched novel is how it captures male friendship: its competitiveness; the undemonstrative, indirect ways men express fondness; as well as the grudging camaraderie among workmates, who might not connect otherwise. Carrington-Atkins says Idlewild has already benefited significantly from the establishment of new events, such as the Summer Oasis musical glamping tent festival and the Idlewild International Film Festival.
